Content Standards Revision
Many of Montana's public school content standards haven't been updated in more than a decade. Content standards include a broad set of subject areas that outline what a student should know and be able to do. The content standards are not a set of curricula, but rather a guide for teachers and school leaders. Beginning in late 2015, the Montana Office of Public Instruction is starting the process of updating content standards for health enhancement, arts, and science.

About Health Enhancement Content Standards Revision
Montana’s public school health enhancement content standards haven’t been updated since 1999. The standards being developed by content experts and educators are meant as a guide for teachers. These are not a set of curricula. Once the negotiated rulemaking committee finishes its work, it’ll be up to the Board of Public Education to approve the suggested standards.

About Arts Content Standards Revision
Montana’s public school arts standards haven’t been updated since 2000. The new standards will be discipline-specific, instead of the previous version which included four artistic disciplines under one broad set of standards. In addition to traditional disciplines such as music, visual arts, theater and dance, the new standards will also include media arts. The standards being developed by content experts and educators are meant as a guide for teachers. These are not a set of curricula. Once the negotiated rulemaking committee finishes its work, it’ll be up to the Board of Public Education to approve the suggested standards.

The proposed standards will be grouped in four areas: (1) physical sciences, (2) life sciences, (3) earth and space sciences, (4) and engineering and technology. The standards being developed by content experts and educators are meant as a guide for teachers. These are not a set of curricula. Once the negotiated rulemaking committee finishes its work, it'll be up to the Board of Public Education to approve the suggested standards.
