Montana Team Nutrition

The Montana Team Nutrition Program is the training arm for school nutrition programs and builds support for healthier school environments through food service training, nutrition education and implementation of the school wellness policy.

Our priority areas are:

Montana Team Nutrition’s office is located at Montana State University in the Department of Health and Human Development.  This enables staff to easily partner with faculty and other key state partners like Montana State University Extension and the Montana Nutrition and Physical Activity Program.

Healthy School Award Programs

Healthy School DayHas your school worked hard to make healthy changes to the school meals program?  Does your school provide nutrition education and physical activity opportunities for its students?  The Montana Team Nutrition Program invites all Montana schools to apply for a Healthy School Award and will assist schools in the application process.

Be a Healthy School Champion!

Introduction

TeamNutrition - USDA

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary recognition program established by the United States Department of Agriculture.  It focuses on three key areas of school wellness:

  1. Healthy school breakfast and lunch meals  and competitive foods,
  2. Nutrition education and
  3. Physical education and activity.

There is an award level to fit any school with award money available:

  • Bronze ($500)
  • Silver ($1000)
  • Gold ($1500)
  • Gold of Distinction ($2000)

Why apply for an award? Allow your school staff to receive:

  • Recognition,
  • Media Coverage,
  • Sense of Pride,
  • Award Money, and most of all:
  • Accomplishment of creating a school environment that supports better health and academic success for students and staff.

Why Apply?
The Montana Team Nutrition Program invites all Montana schools to apply for a Healthier Montana Menu Challenge Award and will assist schools in the application process. Be a Healthy School Champion!

What is the Healthier Montana Menu Challenge?

  • A menu-based recognition program based upon the HealthierUS School Challenge that meets nutrition criteria for breakfast, lunch and a la carte offerings.
  • Applications are open to all Montana schools, regardless of participation level in the school meals program.
  • Allows schools to apply for all three components (breakfast, lunch, and a la carte) or for any one of the three.
  • Recognizes schools serving healthy school meals that are consistent with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA’s MyPlate; thereby allowing more Montana children the opportunity to enjoy whole grain foods, more variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy foods and tasty entrees; and
  • Supports youth in fueling healthy bodies and smart minds.

How To Apply

How to Complete and Submit an Application:
The menu criteria are based on the USDA MyPlate and the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans as well as these guiding principles1

  • The present and future health and well-being of school-age children are profoundly affected by dietary intake and the maintenance of a healthy weight.
  • Schools contribute to current and lifelong health and dietary patterns and are uniquely positioned to model and reinforce healthful eating behaviors in partnership with parents, teachers and the broader community.

Healthier Montana Menu Challenge Application Word Version

Upon receipt of the application, Montana Team Nutrition and/or Montana Office of Public Instruction staff will review it. Please allow four-six weeks for review and award notification. Montana Team Nutrition will contact the school for clarification if needed.

Application Requirements

  1. Schools apply as individual school sites and must meet the specified menu criteria for breakfast and lunch meals and for a la carte food items (if applicable).
  2. Schools can apply for all three components (breakfast, lunch, and a la carte) or for any one of the three.
  3. Schools must involve the school’s wellness committee or organize a review panel or group including, at minimum, a school administrator, a school nutrition program manager and a member of the parent teacher organization. The review panel will sign off on the application.
  4. Once awarded, the Healthier Montana Menu Challenge Recognition is for a two-year time period. The award is for the current school year (the year of approval) plus the following two school years. Schools are encouraged to continue their commitment and reapply at the end of their award period.

Why are school meals important?
The experiences which kids have now with food/meals will shape their future/life-long relationships with food. The goal is to develop healthy, capable and competent eaters.
Meals consumed at school are essential to the growth of healthy students- bodies, minds and behaviors.
It’s good for the bottom line; increased revenue to schools if more students participate in school meals programs (breakfast and lunch).

Why should schools strive to support pleasant and positive mealtimes vs. just getting the students fed?

  • Mealtime should be a time for students to relax, socialize and nourish their bodies and minds. When the mealtime/cafeteria environment is pleasant, students eat better, do better in their academic coursework, and have fewer behavioral problems.
  • Many kids are undernourished, even if they are overfed. School meals provide key nutrients for students to grow and learn to their full potential. School meals may be the only reliable meal of the day for some students.
  • School meals help to develop healthy eating habits and acceptable meal time behaviors.
    A Positive Feeding Approach requires effective teamwork and communication amongst administrators, teachers, aides, school food service staff, students and parents.

Sometimes, school cafeterias are not so inviting: students are pressured to eat, supervising adults are not trained in how to be supportive at mealtime, students are not allowed to talk during meals, and meals are consumed in a hurry to get outside. This training addresses a variety of mealtime scenarios and tips for positive meal time practices.

Overview
In Montana there are many stellar examples of schools that have made positive changes related to healthy eating, active living, and creating a healthier school environment.

To showcase examples of healthy change in schools, the Montana Team Nutrition Program called on youth to take part in the Focus on Health video competition. Through this video contest, Montana schools, organizations, or clubs had the opportunity to win a cash prize gain statewide recognition, and have their video featured at statewide conferences.

Examples of relevant topics include: improvements in the nutrition of foods available in school meals, healthy snack options (vending, concessions, student stores, etc.), Farm-to-School programs, increased opportunity for physical activity, expanded school breakfast programs and healthy school fundraising programs.  Download the 2012 Final Report with sample documents. 2012 Contest Winners
This winter Montana students from Kindergarten through 12th grade created short videos to submit to OPI's Focus on Health Youth Video Contest. Fifteen videos were submitted from across the state competing for the top three prizes and a People’s Choice Award. All the winning teams will be awarded cash prizes and part or all of their videos will be featured at statewide conferences and on the Montana Team Nutrition website. The 2012 winning teams are:

  • Grand Prize:  “You Are What You Eat” made by the Jefferson High School team.
  • Second Place: Kalispell Middle School’s team
  • Third Place: “The Curious Case of Our Food” by Red Lodge High School’s ProStart Class
  • People’s Choice Award: Kalispell Middle School’s
